Planning

Storyboarding and Framing

My group and I planned the title sequence of our documentary and drew a storyboard of it to use when we begin filming it.

We then drew a single frame of each interview we were planning to conduct so we would be able to frame them correctly.
This is the framing for our first interview with a grandparent. It is going to take place in a living room and have pictures and ornaments in the background to highlight the age of the interviewee.
This is the framing for our second interview with a teenager (Leanne). It is going to take place in her bedroom and have things such as a laptop and phone in the background to show that she has a lot of "expensive" things.

This is the framing for our third interview with a dad of a four year old boy. The interview is going to take place in the child's bedroom with the interviewee sitting on the bottom bunk of a bunkbed, and there will be toys and a child's duvet cover on the bed to show that the room belongs to a child.

This is the framing for our fourth interview with Mike, a banking teacher. The interview is going to take place in an office with a desk
Advert

We also drew out a plan of what our print advert would look like after we had completed the editing on the documentary:
Questions

We have two voxpop questions which we will film for our documentary:

1. What three words come to mind when you think of greed?
2. What would you buy if you won the lottery?

Both of these questions will be filmed in Liverpool city centre opposite Marks and Spencers and in Liscard shopping centre.

The questions for our interviews are as follows:

Questions for Leanne (teenager):
1.What do you spend most of your money on?
2. How much money a week do you spend?
3. Do celebrities in the media have an effect on your buying choices? If so, how?
4. What would you buy if you won the lottery?
5. What is your most expensive purchase? Why did you buy it?
6. Do you give money to charity? Why?

Questions for Richard (father):1. How old is your child?

12. Did you have different expectations at Christmas/birthdays when you were a child than your son does now?
13. What was the most expensive thing you were given as a child?
14. Do you give to charity? Why?

Questions for Jean (older generation):
1. How many presents did you get for Christmas/birthdays as a child? What type of presents were they?
2. Do you think children get more spent on them at Christmas/birthdays now?
3. Why do you think that is?

Research

Primary Research

We have four interviews planned:
1. Mike Whitmore, a banking teacher/ex-banker, who we are going to interview in his office.
2. Leanne Hill, a 17 year old teenager, who we are going to interview in her bedroom.
3. Jean Mander, a grandmother, who we are going to interview in her living room.
4. Richard, father of a 4 year old son, who we are going to interview in the child's bedroom.

The interviews will all have typical mise-en-scene of the locations they are filmed in, for example, the banker interview will have a computer or telephone or paperwork on a desk, the teenager interview will have jewellery or clothes or a mobile phone to imply her large spending habits, the grandmother interview will have shelves with ornaments or photographs on, and the dad interview will have toys or games featured in the background.

Secondary Research

The archive material we have collected includes photographs and short video clips. We found the photographs on Google Images, as you can decide what size images the search looks for, and as we needed large, high quality photographs for our documentary, this was ideal. The videos we used were collected from YouTube, as they have a large collection of videos and they are easy to find, despite the fact that the quality on some of them isn't very good.

Still images we have collected include: photographs of Paris Hilton, a photograph of Alexandra Burke, photographs of Michael Carroll, images of sweets in jars, images of Blackberry phones, images of a holiday villa, images of expensive-looking restaurants, images of alcohol bottles, images of medication/tablets, images of unhealthy food/fast food, images of private schools and images of comprehensive schools.

Video clips we collected include: a "old fashioned" style clip of a girl riding a bicycle, news footage of Michael Carroll, the lottery winner who lost all of his money, somebody using a Blackberry phone, panning footage of a villa on a beach, and footage of Alexandra Burke singing.

Formal Proposal

Topic: Greed
Type of documentary: Mixed
Style of documentary: Formal, informative
Channel and scheduling: Channel 4, Sunday, 19:30-20:00. We chose this time because, after looking at the scheduling for that particular channel and day, we decided it would be the best time, as Channel 4 usually has a documentary on in this slot, and our programme will be inheriting the audience, which is our target audience of adults, from the news which is on from 19:00-19:30.
Target audience: Adults, age 36+, both male and female. This is because our questionnaires were answered mostly by this group of people, so our documentary is going to cater for them.
Primary research: Interview with Richie (a dad) in a children's bedroom setting; interview with a grandparent in a living room setting; interview with a teenager in a bedroom setting.
Secondary research: Still images of Paris Hilton, still images or news footage of lottery winner.
Narrative structure: Circular, open.
Outline of content: Titles, interviews, cutaways of money/bills, voiceover, voxpops of people in Liscard
Resource requirements: Video camera, stills camera, tripod.
